William Hill hit in the pocket after Royal Baby date announcementJanuary 14th, 2013 / lee
The recent announcement that the arrival of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first child is due to arrive in July of 2013, has hit online betting site William Hill in the pocket. The announcement came from St James’s Palace and even though the month of July had been the favourite in the betting market, it was quoted at a price of 9/4 with the betting site. The firm also quoted the same price on the next royal baby being born in third or fourth week of July 2013.
William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “The royal baby is starting to cost us a small fortune, we have already paid out on the year and now the month that the baby will be born. We can only hope that they don’t have a baby with ginger hair as that would break the bank.”
The announcement of Will and Kate’s offspring has attracted punters back to alternative markets over Royal Baby betting. One of the popular markets has been the colour of the baby’s hair, with optimistic punters taking a bet on it being ginger. Being the longest odds in the market, William Hill have tried to protect themselves a little from further losses on the baby, trimming the odds on ginger right in from 8/1 to a new price of 4/1. In the royal baby’s hair colour market, punters can take options from brown 6/4, blonde 2/1, black 7/2 and ginger at 4/1.
The market for the name of the baby as well is still trading strongly, with William Hill split over favourites George, Victoria and Diana, all of which are trading at a healthy 10/1 with the sex of the baby not yet known. Elizabeth is offered at 12/1, with Charles, John and Phillip being priced as longer shots at 14/1. Whatever name is chosen, the expectation is that it will be one of the most popular baby names of the year.
Other options for betting on Will and Kate’s baby, is the gender at 10/11 for either option. Betting site William Hill are also offering odds of 4/6 on a caesarean birth and 11/10 for Kate having a natural one.
Irish betting site Paddy Power have gone a step further, offering odds of 66/1 that both the Duchess of Cambridge and Kim Kardashian will give birth on the same day.
A spokesman for Paddy Power said: “If both Kate and Kim do the double, the world’s media will have a baby bonanza on their hands and a right royal fight will be had over those all-important first pictures. It’s altogether more likely though that Kate will reign supreme in a solo effort and that we’ll all be wetting the baby’s head sometime late July.”
