Betfair customers back New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers to make Super BowlJanuary 14th, 2013 / lee
Online betting site BetFair have taken a big response from their customers, as punters flock to get wagers down on who will be contesting the Super Bowl this year in the NFL. If the weight of predictions from betting exchange BetFair’s customers are right, then we will be seeing the New England Patriots square off against the San Francisco 49ers. Those are the two which have been dominating the outright winner market, following the weekend’s divisional action in the AFC and NFC.
It is the divisional championships on the line next weekend, with the New England going up against the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers meeting one of the surprise teams of the season, the Atlanta Falcons. But it seems as if the Ravens and the Falcons are not going to get much of a look in if BetFair customers are right. The New England Patriots are trading as 2.16 favourites for Super Bowl outright winners, followed by the 49ers at 3.09. The Falcons are available at around 6.7 with the Ravens the rank outsiders at 9.36 with BetFair.
It was a thrilling weekend of action in the NFL for the divisional playoffs. The Baltimore Ravens started it all off with a dramatic double overtime win in Denver against the Broncos in freezing conditions. The Ravens, underdogs for the match against the in-form Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, kept legendary line-backer Ray Lewis’ season going. Lewis is due to retire from the game whenever Baltimore bow out of the Super Bowl race. That was ahead of San Francisco making the most of home field advantage as they took out dangers floaters the Green Bay Packers in a high scoring 45-31 affair.
In a dramatic finish in Georgia, the Falcons were up 20 points to nil in the first half. But a storming comeback from the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth quarter, posting 21 points, almost completed a remarkable turnaround. However, despite the Seahawks taking the lead for the first time with 31 seconds on the clock, following the kick off, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was able to get the home side back into field goal range. Kicker Matt Bryant converted with eight seconds to go to avoid a collapse. In the weekend’s’ final game, the New England Patriots made light work of the challenge from the Houston Texans.
It is the Patriots, last year’s losing finalist against the New York Giants, who are the BetFair customers’ number one choice to take the Super Bowl this season, with them eying up success for the fourth time since 2001. The 49ers have been playing well all season and they are expected to be the Patriots’ opponents in Super Bowl XLVII at the Mercedes-Benz Superdrome in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 3rd.
